To fulfill the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirement of considering the full range of reasonable alternatives and associated environmental effects of significant federal actions, DOE has initiated the NEPA process with development of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The EIS assesses potential environmental impacts of actions in remediating tailings, ground water, and contaminated soils at the Moab UMTRA Project Site and vicinity properties and presents a detailed evaluation of proposed on-site and off-site alternatives for permanent disposal of the uranium mill tailings pile at the site.
